Face Mask Donations
When the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) started becoming a dire situation, we decided to join the countless others in a global relief effort. Making masks was the least we could do, and we felt fortunate enough to have a decent amount of resources already on hand to start.
How we started
With the news on every day, we caught a segment featuring UC Berkeley students who put together a comprehensive list of hospitals that were requesting donations for face masks (view the article here). We used this list as a starting point to donate first to hospitals that were directly within our community.
As we began cutting and sewing, we decided that a donation of 50 masks per organization was doable for us, considering the amount of time and effort it takes to sew each one.
Continuing the effort
As we continued donating batches of 50 masks to different hospitals on the list, opportunities started coming our way to donate to other community organizations that were outside of our county and state. Every 2 weeks or so, we would find a new hospital or community organization that was in need of face masks.
Time flew by as we became so busy with the donations, but the next thing we knew, we already had donated up to 500 masks within five months.
How we sustained
When we initially made the decision to start donating face masks, we anticipated what to do in order to help ourselves continue giving back. So we decided to also make masks for selling.
The aim was always to give back to the community during this time of need, so every time we sold one mask, we made another one to donate. The support we received from family, friends, and beyond, was overwhelmingly positive, and it continues even until today. This is how we were able, and still are, to continue sending out donations of face masks.
A Positive Cycle
Although it has slowed down in comparison to earlier months, we still aim to keep up this relief effort for as long as our communities will need it.
